Disaster Relief - Beyond the First News Cycle

Formerly with Crown Growth Partners, Geoff Block founded RLB Squared, LLC, in Bluffton, South Carolina, and oversees daily operations at the real estate development company. He also participates in various philanthropic activities. In addition to donating to his alma mater, Tulane University, Geoff Block supports the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and its Lowcountry Strong Foundation fund, which provides disaster relief and emergency assistance to residents of Beaufort and Jasper Counties in South Carolina.

While most donations come during times when media coverage of a disaster is high and the need is obvious, disaster areas continue to need assistance long after the news cycle moves on. Disaster relief can be seen as a four-phase process.

In the first two phases, the area returns to basic functioning. The first phase deals with restoration of basic order to the area. The second comes soon after, as residents return to daily life and begin to stabilize their communities.

Phases three and four of disaster relief, meanwhile, deal with elements that receive less media coverage. Community-led rebuilding during these phases focuses on rebuilding areas not essential to daily functioning but important to the community. Disaster relief at this stage also requires preparedness education and renovation, ensuring local homes and businesses can withstand later, similar disasters.
