Butoh dance can be described as Japan’s contemporary dance. It is a mix of theater and dance yet it is also deeply influenced by Psychology, Anthropology and even Biology. Laboratorio Danza Teatro Ritual (LEDTR) is dancer Eugenia Vargas’ butoh company. They brought japanese Butoh Master Tadashi Endo (second generation of butoh masters, disciple of Kazuo Ohno) to Mexico for an artistic residence and “Espejo Negro” choreography is the outcome of Endo’s work with mexicans butoh dancers. I was asked by Aura Arreola (dancer and producer of LEDTR) to create a visual concept from their stage work, in order to promote their butoh dance performances in Mexico. Dream, Blood, Stone and Flower were the answers to Master Endo’s question: ¿What is Mexico?
