In 2007 Watermark was approached by Imagination in Auckland New Zealand to update the Bluebird Penguin mascot
We drew a lot of inspiration from 3D animated movies such as Happy Feet and Surf's Up for the fun and happy characters and detailed feather textures. This was a chance to push our 3D skills in regards to character modelling and 3D fur effects on an iconic New Zealand brand.
Starting with some sketches, Watermark artist Phillip Small worked to develop the character's personality
Key to the fresh look were the 3D feathers. These were developed using Cinema 4D's Hair functionality before the model was rigged for posing.
