中国西汉中晚期和东汉时期，汉武帝凭借海路拓宽了海贸规模，“海上丝绸之路”因而兴起。《汉书·地理志》：从徐闻（今广东湛江市徐闻县）、合浦（今广西北海市合浦县）出发，经南海，到达印度半岛的黄支国和已程不国（今斯里兰卡）。这是可见的有关海上丝绸之路最早的文字记载。
