Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist, when you grow up. Picasso
I started this print with this thought in my mind. Psychologists say that children’s artwork is far more than just random lines, nonsensical figures and haphazard splashes of color. Studies have long shown that art created by children is a direct reflection of their inner worlds. Children always draw what they feel, see around them, nature and they do not have any fear of drawing it incorrectly or experimenting with their pictures. These facts inspired me to do something with what related to my experiences and emotions. In the beginning I had to decide what technique to use in order to express myself easily. So I chose woodcut, because this technique is quite difficult, and requires both patience and strength. In spite of everything, xylography allows me to improvise. Also the most important goal for me became to satisfy myself during the working progress and prove Nikolai Gogol’s thought that there is no better satisfaction than the one you get from creativity. Xylography (woodcut) is the oldest Graphic technique. Amongst all other techniques, this is the most explicit one, with infinite possibilities for experimentation. However, this technique became quite forgotten, especially when new ones, such as screen printing, arose. In the beginning I started making one art work by cutting only one piece of wood. In the progress of the work I realized that I needed to use different wood plates, so that my work would progress faster and much more effective. This way my works allowed me to experiment much more, as I can create different compositions only with the form of the wooden plates and without lines or texture. When I started using only the form of the wood plates, I decided to mix woodcuts with screen printing, as this technique is very suitable for using spots. Actually, I wanted to try this a long time ago, but I have never had neither chance nor time. When I tried it in my works I found that these two techniques are very difficult to combine. Xylography is a rich technique with its textures and screen print is only playing with colour, what can actually be done with wood as well.
When I started working with xylography I did not really know how the final work should look like in the end. I only had Nikolai Gogol’s idea and thoughts about children’s creativity and then decided to do something about the peoples from different countries with different religious assimilations and how they become similar living in the same continent. That was also my emotions in a new place where I had no friends, family or my old habits as well. In my  print I used abstract people figures, signs from nature, lines and everything what I saw around me. In addition, I also used some traditional Lithuanian patterns. Actually, I heard some comments that my works look similar to African motifs, so I was surprised when I did a research on African art and found a lot of similar motifs with what Lithuanian ancestors used in their art. It was a new discovery for me.
