The Basilica of Santa Maria is the main temple and the most important historical building of Igualada, a village 65 km away from Barcelona.  Its  origin is from the 11th century, but the current building is mainly from the 17th century.

During the Spanish Civil War  it was converted into a market, and was restored after the war, under the guidance of the architect Cèsar Martinell, who built a crypt beneath the chancel.  In 1949 Santa Maria obtained the title of Minor Basilica  granted by the pope Pius XII.

The crypt  beneath the chancel houses the remains of the 62 victims from Igualada executed during the Spanish Civil War. The names of the victims are written on two marble slabs at both sides of the crypt. Among these names there the ones of the 18 victims killed in La Pobla de Claramunt on 17th September 1936. Before the 62 names there are these words of homage:
“Sea fecundo para la causa de Dios y el bien de la Patria el sacrificio cruento de nuestros hermanos”.
