GROOVE TUBE: Through user research, we found that easy access to cables was a stand out preference for our riders. Internally routed cables can become a hassle for the Average Joe to work on during simple bike maintenance. On most bikes, internally routed cables are a cosmetic feature. As a team, we decided to route our cables externally and in this, I found the opportunity to bring back a simple piece of retro technology for GT: the Groove Tube. In profile, the externally routed cables are hidden in the Groove Tube feature. At other angles, the Groove Tube visually celebrates the external cables and exploits GT's commitment to functionality and versatility.
SENSOR ALLOY: We also designed a more price-conscious alloy version of the frame. The alloy Sensor performs exactly the same as the higher-priced Carbon version. Designers respect that maintaining a low price point means certain features will not make it through to the final design. The Groove Tube feature was out of our riders’ budget and had to remain as an exclusive feature to the Carbon frame. Aesthetically, I made sure this frame reflected GT's rawness and simplicity as a brand while maintaining the compelling proportion and gestural values of the Carbon frame.
DESIGN PRESENTATION MODEL: I create physical models to help sell my designs and resolve surfaces in need of more attention. This is a fast method utilizing my surrounding resources such as 3D printing and partially completed engineering models. I print what engineering has currently modeled and use bondo to sculpt the rest of the surfacing in. This method also allows me to rapidly change surfaces and see how they will appear in reality. The use of bondo on 3D printed material provides for a rigid structure that is strong enough to fasten components onto for fit and function testing.
