MOSAIK - an urban community

MOSAIK
creating an urban network
CONCEPT
To create a community it was necessary to analyze the people in the surroundings extensively: employees of the adjacent companies, schools, kindergartens and residents.
MOSAIK combines three areas with different programs for different needs, which can be used independently but profit from each other to boost the network.
First floor: Place of encounter / Gastronomy and space for culture and children
Ground floor: Supermarket with focus on regionality and sustainability
Outside: Community garden with farming areas, air lawns and opportunities for seating
LOCATION
The building we chose for MOSAIK is located on campus of an old marzipan factory in the district Altona. You can enter the building by two levels: The southern entrance leads you to the ground floor (top left picture) while via the eastern access you enter the first floor.
THE SUPERMARKET
Consumption is an important and powerful instrument in our modern society. With our spatial concept we want to create a new awareness - not only for products but for its origin, worth and the people behind it.
With a new behavior, consumption can turn into something really positive for the consumer and the producer.
GARDEN
Beds and greenhouses for rent, farming areas for schools, outdoor lawns and sitting opportunities are available for the whole community. The garden area extends from outside to a small part of the inside. The aim is to offer a garden to urban dwellers, bring nature into the city and support self-sufficiency.
Facing the garden you reach the entry of the supermarket and the wide, planted stairway to the first floor.
THE PLACE OF ENCOUNTER
The first floor offers a food-market with a range of culinary products from local gastronomies to cater for employees of adjacent companies.
The food-boxes are movable to create new spaces for cultural events, exhibitions, concerts or private parties. Next to the food-market are workshop areas and areas especially for children to fill the created space with life.
Two large openings on the first floor connect the Place of Encounter with the ground floor. These openings and further changing of architecture enable new views and lightning conditions.
