Charlie Pite — Identity & Web

Charlie Pite is a copywriter from London, currently based in Berlin.

Having known Charlie and admired his work for many years I was really excited to work with him on a radical refresh of his online presence and visual identity.

The goal with the identity was to modernise and personalise. Charlie's writing is clear, concise and down to earth, and when expressing opinion through editorial or longer form pieces his wit really jumps out of the text. This wit is an important part of Charlie's character that we hoped to convey via a really bold, colourful personal brand palette.

Like all creative professions copywriting can be tough. To successfully execute any piece of writing you have to balance the expectations of the client with your own professional insights and personal sensibilities, but importantly you are ultimately writing for an audience and while you can often predict how they will react to the text en masse, how they perceive the text individually is an inscrutable part of the process.

To reflect this aspect within Charlie's site a piece of code was devised to read either the mouse position or device orientation (depending on the device being used) to alter the colour scheme of the site's non-white text. Not only does this bring a subtle interactivity but helps highlight that connection between the writer's text and how it can change based on a reader's interpretation.
