Loerie Award Winner 2019: Campaign Bronze

Hike for H20

ign by the Hiking Organization of Southern Africa (HOSA) attached specifically to their Green Flag Trails quality control system. The campaign aims to assist with the maintenance of the hiking trails in the fynbos biome in the Western Cape by restoring and preserving the biome’s indigenous ecosystem.

The Port Jackson acacia is an invasive species and a prominent threat to the plants that constitute this biome. While efforts have been made to remove these trees, they have been unsuccessful due to the time and labour-intensive need for regular follow-up checks on such a widespread area.

The Hike for H20 campaign encourages and equips both local and international hikers to take part in this follow-up process, that requires the identification and removal of seedlings, while on their planned hikes in return for a reward.
Campaign branding_
Hike for H20 is the name for the project. It incorporates the aesthetic of a badge and portrays the fynbos, water crisis and hiking. The colors are derived from the fynbos flowers.
Project pamphlet_
Individual who would like to know more while at travel desk or tourisme offices have access to printed information pamphlets.
These are the same pamphlets that individuals taking part in the project will receive when departing on their hike.

Botanical illustrations in the pamphlet show the participant how to identify the Port Jackson acacia in its seedling stage (Collector side) and in its mature growth stage (spotter side). These trees are easily differentiated from the fynbos which means that an individual need not have any special training to identify them and if they are still seedlings can easily remove them.
Campaign posters_
These posters are part of the first phase of the campaign. 3 different posters for 3 different target audiences. The three target audiences are Nature Enthusiast hiker, Atleisure Hikers and Family Orientated Hikers.
The disposable backpack is for the hiker taking part in the project:
