THIS IS THE PLACE
This project explored alternative ways of presenting illustrated works. My piece features a fold out panel expanding on the area to present my illustration as well as to add to the Nigerian folktale the illustrations are based on. I used  the below story as inspiration for a vertically growing city whose inhabitants harvest the sky which is constantly moving higher to escape the sky farmers. I explored the world by showing what the cities inhabitants do, day-to-day. The sky farmers are mainly kept busy throughout the day by climbing ladders and stairs all the way up to the sky to harvest it, but  they are also deep thinkers and playful busybodies.

NARRATIVE INSPIRATION:
Why the sky is far away: A Nigerian folktale
Mary-Joan Gerson (Author)

“In the beginning, the sky was so close to the earth that anyone who was hungry could just reach up, take a piece, and eat it. The sky was delicious, taking sometimes of meat stew, sometimes of roast corn.  But the people grew careless with the sky’s gifts, taking more than they needed to satisfy their hunger. The sky grew angry, threatening to withhold its gifts if the people continued to waste them. True to its promise, the sky moved far away, and the Bini were forced to plough the  fields and hunt the forest."
