Renoir and Friends, The Phillips Collection
Design of title wall, mural graphics, text panels
Renoir and Friends explored Pierre-August Renoir's painting Luncheon of the Boating Party, one of The Phillips Collection's premier artworks. The title wall design pictured above featured enlarged post card images and a photo mural showing friends and places that inspired the painting, along with the exhibition title and introductory wall text. The title was adapted from the exhibition catalogue (designed by others).
One major component of the exhibition dealt with technical studies that showed changes Renoir made while working on the painting. The text panels (example above) showed X-radiograph, infrared, and paint layer analysis images side-by-side with details of the painting to demonstrate these changes. The panels were designed to be clean, organized, and easy to digest. Above right, the infrared image of the painting enlarged to full size.
