This project was done as a part of the final year thesis project at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology. The Brief for this project was to create outcomes for increasing the Brand Presence of Karnataka Tourism. Karnataka is a state that offers a little bit of everything to everyone, which undoubtedly drove the existing tagline for Karnataka’s Tourism- “One State, Many Worlds.” As designers, the challenge was to find the essence of a space like Karnataka that is so “diverse” and could mean different things to different people. So I thought of telling the story of Karnataka through the experiences of the people of Bengaluru. I spoke to over 80 people asking them what was the first
thing that came to their mind when I said ‘Karnataka.’ From this, I collected a host of authentic, personal and sometimes overlapping memories of food, travel, culture, art, and language. These stories were of the little things that string together Karnataka: whether it’s having masala chai at 11 at night in Shivajinagar; silk shopping in Mysore; the fragrance of flowers in Malleshwaram market; or having coconut water on the streets of Badami in the heat of summer. My installation tells these stories. And I chose to make illustrations, because I feel they make these moments more dramatic. So people can see in these stories a moment that they were once a part of or would like to be a part of.
