“Santa Muerte” (Spanish for Holy Death or Saint of Death) is a venerated Female saint in Mexico who embodies the concept of Death and is tasked with the safe delivery of souls into the a afterlife. Where in most parts of the world, death is seen as a subject less discussed and o en taboo, the ideal of Santa Muerte opposes that no on en rely. She is a hugely iconic figure in the southern parts of the United States and her influence can be widely seen in the world famous “Day of the Dead” festivals, of which sees the expansive use of skeletal imagery to remind people to respect the dead and not to alienate their own mortality. This series of works draw inspiration from this particular concept of welcoming and accepting death through various religion and ideas from around the world. The placement of religious architecture is intentionally done in a manner that diminishes their grandeur in favor of the huge animal skeletons they are built upon.
