Yama Wine Spa B&B

Redesign a Boutique Spa B&B - Case Study
Yama Spa B&B is a one of a kind Wine Spa placed in one of the most beautiful pieces of Israel, Zihron Yaakov, with splendid view to Mediterranean Sea. Right after building one more room, the owners decided to renew they old website.
The challenge
Yama Spa B&B is “one off”. Beautiful, aesthetic, tempting. Besides, it’s a low budget project flavored with it’s owners huge ambition and desire.
With that said, it’s a business, and I need to provide a solution for bringing a new clients, who want to spent they special moments, relax, and their decision lays on what they see and feel through the interactive experience on the website.

So, my challenges list is:
Define potential clients
Attract them in the first moment and make them stay.
Show them advantages and services
Build overall user experience of surfing between different sections.
Impove user’s satisfaction.
Create uniqueness for each page.
Competitive Research
Searching for different Spa and resort websites, I gathered information about the competition in order to forecast a potential for the market. I sorted what’s common and what’s unique about each place.

Competitive Research affected the finding the right strategy for attraction. Together with a client we’ve been able to see the true advantages: view, area, wine, music and art, unique design.

It help me to define two main categories of clients: those “on easy street” clients and those young couples searching for romantic weekend.
Site Map
In order to understand the flow and to see the whole picture, I usually start with a site map. I’s like a plan for the scenario - how does the main character deals with the imminent threat?
Visual Design
This kind of clients usually don’t “appreciate” wireframes. All questions usually lead to one: how would it look like? After drawing quick sketches and notes on paper during the meetings with a client I immidiately jumped to produce a visual design.

Impressed with a competitors examples, best and awarded designs, I knew:
We need gorgeous photos and videos. We crafted static photos with only one part moving: a couple swinging, a cluds moving in the sky, a jacuzzi sparkling, a curtain moving on the background…
It became a light motive on the whole website.
We need to SHOW the rooms:
We need Yama’s strong, bold main “Mulberry wood” color to “exist”.
We need something warm and artistic, like a ray of light beaming through a purple sky. We decided it would be a hand drawn icons.
We need to provide a smart PRICE LIST with micro interactions.
Before and After
What have I learned from this project?
Small business clients is extremely sensitive for every little piece of his “baby”.  Sometimes even more then it’s needed. That leads to produing the unnecessary work. It’s not only a problem of time, but it’s a misunderstanding the main target. My role was not only to give a good design service, but to consult the client with the right decisions in order to run his business in the best way.

Hence, I learned to use my professional experience, as well as enrich the knowledge reading books about business leading, and thus to grow up even more providing a unique design and consulting services for my future clients.
