The Medical Journal of the Dutch Indies. A Platform for Medical Research is a book that illustrates not only the medical history in the colonial time, but also the history of tropical medicine, through the scientific articles published between 1852 and 1942 in the Geneeskundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch-Indie (GTNI). During my tenure as the founding director of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology (1992-2014), I learned to appreciate its great significance in the development of medical science and medicine. Almost all the articles on the discovery of Vitamin B1 and its deficiency as the cause of beriberi, were published in the journal, between 1890 and 1927, leading to Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for Christiaan Eijkman in 1929. This very reason makes me enthusiastically embrace the idea to put together a book to illustrate the significance of the journal in 2013. I am most pleased that AIPI was able to support the initiative together with KNAW.
