Q:Where are you from?
A:I am German and live alternately in Hamburg and Berlin.
Q:How long have you been drawing or painting for?
A:As a young boy I happily drew with my friends. During my time at school I earned myself some extra pocket money by selling little comic cartoons. Years later I studied to become a sculptor at a University in Berlin. As a painter I am self-taught. I was always curious about what can be done with colour.
Q:Do you paint in traditional media as well as digital?
A:No. I don't have the time or the interest to work in the traditional way. For me there is no way back, unless there is a complete power failure!
Q:What’s your favorite thing about painting digitally?
A:Digital painting cuts it both ways. Each action and every pencil stroke is reversible. Digital work is very forgiving. Any mistakes are easily erased and this saves time and paper. Of course, on the other hand the artistic decision is deprived of its radicalism. I would have loved to have seen Vincent van Gogh working with procreate on an iPad.
Q:How would you describe your style?
A:In my opinion, the portrayed content is more crucial than the artistic style.I like it, that my drawings show sometimes a fresh and surprising effect, but are also exactly formulated. Like a spontaneous thought, a realisation or an invention. It's exhilarating to achieve this effect every so often.
Q:What do you do when you’re not painting?
A:I have a very interesting job as a creative director. I develop storyboards and concepts in a team. The topics reach out to augmented reality applications from 3D promotional and industrial films to live action movies.
Q:What’s your favourite work of art?
A:I adore the art of the early Renaissance like Piero della Francesca and other artists from this era. But one painting in particular I have admired since childhood is Erie Shore by R.B. Kitaj.
Q:Is there a particular skill or technique that you’re trying to develop or improve in your art?
A:I love to work fast on a simple motif from reality like a shoe or a vegetable etc. Of course it's also important to engage more profoundly and spend more time on a theme. To develop a composition, to tell a whole story in one picture. I am still trying to expand and develop these skills in digital painting.
