Enactive Mind and Media Workshop

In this workshop, we familiarise ourselves with the concept of enactive mind and learn by practical work how enactive narrative systems can be applied to designing media projects.
The view to enactive mind has its theoretical foundations in enactive cognitive sciences promoted by Varela et al. (1991). T
hey set the human mind to a systemic context. Mind, body and world are considered to be interrelated, interdependent and to constitute holistic first-person experience of being and playing a part in the world. The concepts of enactive cinema (Tikka 2008) and enactive media (Tikka 2010) suggest going beyond the conventional and implicitly dualist concept of human–computer interaction by emphasising unconscious interaction between the participant and narrative systems. Instead of directly manipulating the narrative, the unfolding of the story is affected by the participant’s emotional participation, tracked by biosensors.

Urban Soul is a community emotional journal app in which every user can contribute with their own story connected to a city, and listen to other’s people memories.
The access to other people’s memories is possible just when the user is feeling similar emotions that the speaker felt in that moment, in that place, when them were recording. Through the softwares Empatica | IBM Watson | Affectiva feelings and emotions will be collected and analyzed.

USER
Empatica, through EDA and HR, will collect and analyze people feeling during the day.
If the system recognizes some major changes it will send the user a notification.
They could add a note (that describes the context, creating a personal journal that shows how environment makes you feel), refresh the map (to check for memories left by other people) or just ignore the notification.

NARRATOR
IBM Watson | Affectiva will recognize and analyze people’s feeling, through microexpressions and tone of voice.
Empatica will be used as a double check of speaker’s emotions and will collect how data change while they tell the story.
