TOP10 IBEST DESIGN AWARD
I made a portfolio that was elected Brazil's TOP10 iBest Design Award in 1998. An honor for a recent graduate in Graphic Design to be on the list of the best 10 website in the design category along with the website of Nike, Close Up and F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi.
Chasing Dreams...

I dreamed of getting a job in São Paulo, the great commercial and cultural center of South America, but I lived and studied graphic design in a small town called Goiânia. I needed to show my talent to the design agencies in São Paulo to know that I existed. The challenge was far greater than the distance between cities: 1000 kilometers.

I started my college in 1992 and already in the third year I worked in graphic design companies. In 1997, the year of my graduation, I started working for a web design company. That's when I saw a flash animation on the internet, it was love at first sight! This company had the installation CD of Macromedia Flash 2.0 with some tutorial videos in English, although I knew nothing of English and nobody in the team knew how to work with Flash. Watching the tutorial videos and with a lot of effort, I learned to work on it.

I would make a website portfolio in Flash to show my talent in São Paulo.

Macromedia Flash was starting to become popular and professionals working with this software were very rare in Brazil. I started creating the website portfolio called Vento7 on an IBM 486 Aptiva. It was more than 2 years saving to buy this PC. I did not have to travel 1000 kilometers, knocking from door to door of the advertising agencies showing my portfolio folder to get a job.
Wind of Winner

Wind is my sign in the Aztec horoscope. The wind concept would allow me to make Flash animations on the design elements on the screen. The barcode is one icon of design as serial production. The bars contain encrypted information, the mouse pointer would be the barcode reader to show the site visitor information about me.

I had few artworks to show so the website itself had to be very creative. The home of the site was clean and minimalist. The menu was a colored barcode in green (Credits), blue (Gallery, logo and websites), cyan (Web links), red (Animations and games that had done in flash) and orange (Contact) with the word vento below.

The word vento means wind. When you clicked on one of the colored bars a wind blew the barcode to a new screen. On the new screen the blown barcode formed colored bars (green, blue, cyan, red and orange) indicating the menu of the website.

I hosted the site at Tripod.com and received proposals to work in various cities in Brazil. I accepted an opportunity to work in São Paulo 2 months after the publication of the website. In the same year the Portfolio Vento7 was elected TOP10 iBest Design Award in 1998.
Tripod

My site was hosted on Tripod, it was one of several sites trying to build online communities during the 1990s. For a student leaving the University was perfect as it was free.
