The Raw Gold Of The Amazon: Açaì

Açaì, the raw gold of the Amazon.

Beira do Río, is a community of people living far away from civilization, deep within the Amazon forest in Parà, Brazil. The river is one of the most important source of life, but the main income comes from the Açaì fruits commerce.
Açaí is a beautiful palm tree, native to the Amazon, growing mainly in swamps and floodplains close to the river estuary, and is known as the Amazon's treasure. The round black-purple berries are sold everywhere around Brasil and to many different foreign countries for it's healthy properties and excellent taste. Açaí berries contain an incredible amount of powerful antioxidant and healthy omegas. For centuries, local people have been harvesting Açaí from palm trees in the old traditional way. Today, gatherers still prepare the peçonha, a rudimentary climbing belt, made with a palm branch, indispensable to reach the top of the 20meters tall palm tree and cut the clusters full of berries.  This natural resource is highly sustainable and contributes to the conservation and protection of two million acres of rainforest, employing the locals in harmony with their environment and cultural traditions.
