SUGAR RUSH
Sugar Rush is a visual project inspired by my wild imagination as a child. The younger me would imagine being surrounded by colorful sweet treats whenever I experienced a sugar rush. As I grow older, there is an expectation to focus on the future and only make time to do things that lead to money. Thus, the sugar rush imagination that was once a colorful flying sweet treat scenery is slowly starting to fade away. The suite of prints that I have created is an attempt to share my sweet experience of the imagination I had as a child.
The first time Sugar Rush is displayed was in Rm 204 is a group show designed by 17 talented visual artists with different backgrounds who works in diverse media. In the group show, each artist have the freedom to choose the topic and subject matter for their individual works.
After spending quite some time thinking about a subject matter that I want to tackle for this project, I was suddenly reminded of the saying:
"Do what you love and love what you do"
Then, I just knew for sure that if I have 7 weeks to work on a project, I want to spend that 7 weeks tackling a topic that I enjoy working on:
SWEET TREATS!
I started the project by listing many of my favorite sweet treats, then narrowing a list to 4 sweet treats that can still read as the same things when I illustrate them with different colors (example: cinnamon roll would not look like a cinnamon roll if i illustrate it in blue, whereas cupcake is often decorated with colors and still would look like a cupcake when illustrated in green).
After choosing 4 sweet treats, I decided on the color palette and the arrangement I want them to be in. I played around with the arrangement to make it look shuffled while keeping it clean and organized.
Subsequently, I hand screen printed each of the sweet treats and framed them with hand made white frames to add a touch of modern and to make them look more clean.
