I have been doing research on Sandy Skoglund and have been inspired by her amazing creativity. As a result of learning about her journey, I created artwork titled REFLECTIONS OF DROWNING. What I have created is a direct result of being inspired by the deeper meaning that always seems to be represented in Sandy’s work. In the Live Photo above, what is being depicted is a woman drowning at the bottom of a vast amount of water. She is laid out on a mattress with streams of blood rising up towards the surface. Slightly above her is a reflection of herself swimming down attempting to save her, but can she? On the left hand side there is a woman watching the woman in pink attempting to save herself but is seemingly not close enough. She is bleeding out as she is almost at the bottom of the water reflecting on the idea of her own reflection coming to save her however her reflection is nowhere insight. The overall concept and question of the artwork created is: Are the woman depicted in the Live Photo actually drowning or are they metaphorically drowning, being consumed by the environment around her? Having the woman lay on a bed is a representation of her life at home, the representation of pain, the woman with dark hair and a colored dress is represented as a person on the outside looking in.
