Riverfest 2018, Waltham Massachusetts

Riverfest is an annual event held along the banks of the Charles River in Waltham. Food trucks and amplified music are always part of the scene—but the focus of interest is on the craftspeople who offer their wares for sale, and the "demonstrators" who teach or inform us, or inspire us by their example.

Artists, of course, fall into the latter category. They demonstrate the artistic process. At this year’s Riverfest, I had a chance to photograph just such an artist at work. What I learned is that facial expressions—both smiles and grimaces—can be part of the creative process, even when the artwork presents no great challenge.

Incidentally, this artist was seated next to an operator of an antique lathe, another demonstrator whom I photographed, and whose images can be viewed at Machinist.
