Front Stoop by Charlotte Beal, 2014

In urban, suburban, and rural settings, front stoops are spaces for socialization, celebration, and respite. As the transition between the home and outside, stoops marry the private and public spheres, merging the familiarity of home with the vibrance of the outside. Front Stoop is a unattached, wooden stoop, constructed to mimic front stoops around the world. I constructed it out of wood and painted and stylized it to look worn and inviting. It, too, morphed into an intimate gathering space. Front Stoop became the site for many dinners, sing-a-longs, and group photos.
Photos 1 and 3 were taken by David Scott Mills. Photo 4 was taken by Leslie Moore.
