7th Grade - Digital Illustration
7th grader with expressed interest in animation, was struggling to apply themselves. Had experienced multiple instances were they were told they did not have the applicable skill set to become an animator. Student would no longer apply themselves to practice drawing, or other creative work, resulting in an artistic blockage. When asked why, the student expressed that they did not want to fail. Student had an affinity for the online application Scratch and was very good with technology. I decided to introduce the student to Adobe Illustrator, because they had no prior experience working with the medium and would be able to approach creating work with a clean slate. The student was able to excel and see the outcome of their practice and hard work, and apply their growth to other mediums, with a renewed growth mindset.
Student learned how to search online for tutorials and other tools in order to be self-reliant and proactive about their growth and education. Student would also work on assignments in public spaces where other teachers and peers were able to compliment them on their amazing work.
Student's finalized work was presented in a showcase with other completed projects to their parents, teachers, and peers where they received positive affirmation for their visible growth. Student eventually went on to begin to try more, fail more, and grow more in all of their academic fields and creative endeavors.
