"I'm totally not afraid, but I'll just take-a-peek outside of my tent anyway," Billy said to himself.
The night was filled with weird, scary noises. He was surrounded by wild animals – danger on all sides.
Billy was sleeping out in his tent. In the backyard.
I'm not afraid, Billy repeated. "Just the same, I'm glad it's so bright tonight."
Hey, wait a minute. How could it be light at night?
Wasn't night supposed to be dark? It was at that very moment Billy noticed the moonlight started to fade.
Billy had no choice. He knew he'd have to go up into space and bring back the broken moon to fix it.
Otherwise there would be no light at night for anyone around the world ever!
Now, where to find a spaceship this late at night? Oh sure!
The super-hyper-tronic wheelbarrow had plenty of power, thanks to a 100-foot long extension cord.
And Billy, the Cosmic Star Ranger, was whisked away from the surface of the Earth, away from the pull of gravity,
away from having to brush his teeth. Billy was on his way to fix the broken moon.
As fast as a streaking meteor, Billy arrived at the darkened moon.
Luckily, the moon was only the size of your average beach ball. So Billy was able to tie his rope around the moon
and tow it back to Earth for some serious needed repairs.
The light bulb in the moon was probably just burned out, Billy decided.
But hey, where would Billy find another light bulb without making lots of noise and disturbing his mom?
Wait a second. The Jeweled Caves of Argo! Of course!
Billy coiled the garden hose to his belt. Then he put a spaghetti drainer on his head.
Now he was ready to explore the Caves and search for the Crystal Jewel of Argo, which would surely
light up the moon forever and ever.
Fabulous treasures! Beautiful gems! Chests of gold!
And there, among the wealth and riches, was the Crystal Jewel. Once thought lost forever,
now discovered again by Billy, the famous explorer and treasure hunter.
Ha! Child's play! The treasure was his! Billy raised the precious Crystal Jewel over his head, glowing in triumph.
Back inside his highly technological Lunar Workshop,
Billy read about the moon. Let's see. Normally, the moon was about a quarter of a million miles from the Earth.
Right now of course, the moon was in Billy's tent. "Oh, here we go. Moonlight is actually sunlight reflecting off the moon.
Wow! There was no light bulb inside the moon after all. Weird."
Oh no! That meant the moon wasn't broken at all!
Now Billy had to get the moon back up into space where it belonged. Boy, a quarter of a million miles was a long way
to send the moon, that was farther than to Grandma and Grandpa's house but Billy knew just how to do it.
Quick! To the Lunar Launching Pad!
Once again, Billy had saved the day. Or rather the night.
The moon was safely back in space. Billy thought of all the things that depended on the moon.
The Man in the Moon. The Moonlight Sonata. The cow that jumped over the moon. Moon River. Moon Pies.
All saved, thanks to Billy!
Billy gathered his toy soldiers and model cars. Then he tore up some old newspapers and sat in his little red wagon.
Suddenly, there was a ticker tape parade in Billy's honor. The crowd cheered and called out his name.
Billy was on top of the world. And underneath the moon.
Shortly after the parade, Billy was noticing how the telephone poles began to sway and
sprout sails when the voice of Mission Control came over his headphones.
"Billy, you're making way too much noise out there. Come inside and sleep in your own bed, Billy's mom called out.
"That's a roger, Houston," Billy said.
Billy ran into the house to tell his mom about the big pirate ship in his backyard.
"Wow! Sitting around the kitchen table were some friendly neighbors. They must have stopped by for a visit and Mom's
fresh baked chocolate chip cookies! Yummy!"
