‘Blast Over’ is an exploration of my personal identity.
Within this series of work, I consider what and whom has shaped my identity. These considerations are expressed through imagery inspired by the fundamentals of traditional American tattoo iconography, the ideas surrounding cover up or blast over tattoos, and repurposed ready-made imagery – sourced from local vintage stores located in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
The canvas – and arrangement of the series – draws on the memories of visiting my grandparents’ home, and the time I’ve spent working within a tattoo studio.
Although worlds’ apart, both environments have a connection through the decorated walls of paintings and prints – all housed in mismatched frames of different styles and sizes.
Creating a publication for Blast Over I wanted to continue the narrative of “Blasting Over”.
To achieve this within my publication I used gilclear (transparency) stock with the explanation and break down of the works that lay underneath it.
By doing this the ideas of blast over are captured within the publication and pairs well with the works when they are installed.
