As part of the annual Africa Utopia Festival, Southbank Centre ran a 5 week short course for aspiring fashion journalists. The culmination of this short course was a magazine - to be reported, written and sent to print live on the day of the fashion gala.

My role was to attend a number of the classes and talk about what went into the design of a magazine - for example what a flat plan was (a mud map of every page), how typography works (quotes, headlines, body copy, image credits etc), and my process of gathering inspiration for the look and feel (trends, fonts, textures, colours). This gave the students something to work to on the day, and me some insight into what they'd be reporting on.

The day itself was a 24 hour day. At 9am I arrived at the festival hall with 3 designs in tow, but in the end it was a design that happened on the fly. The name of the publication hadn't even been decided until half way through the day! Dual spoke to the duality of being part of both the Afrian Diaspora and a modern England. As an Australian and somewhat of an outsider, this was an incredible cultural event to be part of. Bleary eyed and buzzing, I sent it to print at 9 am the next day.
