Miror - Digital Clock w/Wireless Charging

DIGITAL CLOCK w / WIRELESS CHARGER

MOTIVATION
I am one of those sinners that sleep with my phone and have used is as a alarm clock for as long as I've owned a mobile phone. With the spark of an instagram challenge known as Render Weekly, where a digital clock was the challenge at hand, I decided to design a concept I've been wanted myself for a while.

To begin with, I currently have an IKEA wireless charger by my bed, which I personally like, but I sometimes miss the ability to take a glance on the table and immediately know what time it is, without having to lift up the phone. In addition, as I live up in the cold North, I was thinking how a digital clock could potentially prepare me in the morning on what I should wear for that day.

THE CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND INSPIRATION
As much as I like the IKEA charger, there's a design nuance that leaves me a little bit annoyed, which is that it can be a little bit tricky to find the correct spot for the charging to engage. That means I have to pay attention to the position and visually wait and confirm that it's actually charging. With that in mind, I wanted to design a shape that would more easily get your phone positioned correctly. However, I like the minimalistic design and that it makes it simple to charge a phone by just putting it on the surface.

THE MIROR CONCEPT
The concept developed below is a digital clock with an NFC connection and a wireless charger for your phone. The thought is that by connecting the phone to the charger, the clock would get out current information like the weather, temperature, but also indicate if you actually have turned your alarm on for the morning. A little battery indicator would obviously also be part of the concept

I also have a significant other who's a light sleeper, and would sometimes wake up if I receive mails and/or message during the nights, even if it is set to vibrate. By connecting to the NFC, the thought is that the phone would be automatically be put to "do not disturb mode", and instead indicate potential messages or missed calls on the screen.

TECHNICAL DETAILS
The concept was modeled using Siemens NX and renders was made using KeyShot. The renders was moderately photoshopped to bring out more pop in the renders, while the animation had some minor tweaking in After Effects.

DISPLAY ANIMATION
The example below shows the positioning of the phone with the according display reaction to a connected unit.
