Frames of Mind was inspired by the constant dilemma that one is faced with when trying to select the appropriate film for enjoyment. The precise problem that I wanted to address was that of looking for the corresponding film to suit any imaginable permutation of mood as well as fulfilling the role of a time-saving manual, guiding the reader to watch a more diverse, superior selection of films than that provided by main stream media.

The publication functions as a quirky interactive guide, much like a map to illuminate the path to quality entertainment. The book is written in a conversational, tongue-in-cheek manner, in order to draw the reader in, and provide an engaging platform with which to experience different genres of cinema.
An infographic questionnaire forms the basis for the publication, allowing the reader to decide whether they would like to remain in their current state of mind or whether they would prefer a shift towards a different disposition. Once their desired mood has been identified, they are presented with a mood key with which to consult, which consequently leads to a list of possible film choices, tailor-made for the individual.

Many film lovers identify with a certain genre of film, a particular ensemble cast or a style of cinematography. Another feature of the publication provides the reader with the opportunity to identify their film director ‘Spirit Animal’. The reader is rewarded with the manifestation of their preferred cinematic style in the form of a bizarre looking modernist animal, each illustrated to bear the characteristics of a film director. With each spirit animal
comes another range of film choices that may suit the reader’s preferences.

The style of design is inspired by modernism, but somewhat offbeat in order to achieve balance with the rigid nature of the infographics. Throughout the design, the image of the eye is used as the representation of mood. The publication was created as an amusing source of entertainment as well as a way to ignite interest in unchartered realms of cinema.
