Origami X Materials

In order to enhance the designers' understanding in origami, its structural principle, the selection of different materials and its potential, Material Resource Centre has organized an exhibition to showcase a variety of origami-inspired houseware from the industry as well as origami designs and installations by the students. We hope that the exhibition will be a source of inspiration for designers to create practical works that can solve different problems for our future lives.

Modern origami design is no longer a sculpting process, but a way of designing objects that are neither limited to materials nor folding methods. Designers use origami-inspired structure, folding style, different raw materials and sophisticated calculation to bring a variety of origami elements into everyday life, realizing many different design works that brought us unexpected surprises. Some of them constantly transform themselves in order to create a different users’ perception, while others provide practical solutions to different problems we encountered in our lives.

The key visual of exhibition is using the technique of folding to change the characteristics of materials, allowing a two-dimensional material to acquire three-dimensional attributes. The circle in the design exists between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, which conveys the transformation process of folding is the most importance of origami design. Audience can also learn different folding type of origami through interaction of folding leaflet which applied a variety of origami pattern.
