Dust Cover Design

The following project involved designing dust covers for books based off of the Helvetica Movie by Gary Hustwit and a book by Roald Dahl.
Helvetica
Development of a book dust cover inspired by the Helvetica movie by Gary Hustwit, as well as how Helvetica is a typeface which is based on effective communication. To display this I looked at how the typeface translated into different languages. Looking at the basic Arabic alphabet which focuses on letter forms which differ from the anatomy of english letter forms. I was interested in how Helvetica was able to work across the different languages.
Through freedom and flexibility we shape and form letters, we start with the instinctual and mechanical handwriting that flows from the pen. It is only through different mediums that we find innovation and originality. It is in these curves and loops that we find the techniques that perpetuate the styles. It is then that we experiment with the limitations to create order, following grids that remain loyal to the free letters formed and adapting them for the digital world. These are three stages that remain constant in the development of typography in a multilingual industry
Roald Dahl - Cruelty
This dust cover required a typeface to be designed, this typeface would have to convey the content of the book.

The book is a collection of stories that were written between 1953 to 1974, these stories are written for adults. Roald Dahl is the world’s number 1 storyteller.

It is a streak of darkness residing in us that causes humans to be cruel when meaning to be kind.

The loving mother of a child who would grow to be history’s greatest monster, a man with a priceless painting tattooed on his back, two young bullies and a young boy and a wise king with a wicked sense of humor. All show how and why it is we make other suffer, and reveal a darker side.
