Gustav Metzger's 'Liquid Crystal Environment' installation art piece
MUSIC VIDEO INSPIRATION.
Directed by award-winning choreographer Holly Blakey (Florence & The Machine, Jessie Ware), inspiration for the video came from an art installation by Gustav Metzger titled 'Liquid Crystal Environment'.
Metzger's art piece was an immersive light display using heat-sensitive liquid crystals, which was first shown at the Tate Modern in 1965.
PSYCHEDELIC VIDEO VISUALS
Projected into the dark concrete industrial setting, the music video features splashes of psychedelic colours that illuminate the dancers and of the singer herself. In an otherwise bare and industrial setting, there is an eery playfulness to the video, as the figures strangely dance and contort in and around the Tate building's large concrete columns. Part of the video is shot from a low angle, accentuating the enormity and height of the space and its immense, monolithic columns, pierced by bright light from above.
DESIGN PROCESS.
The concept for the album cover was to create an abstract interpretation of the setting and music video itself. I kind of snapshot 'micro-climate' to incapsulate the strong visual direction of the video. I hand made the piece of work before immersing it in water to art direct and photograph the piece. I then brought it into the computer to digitise and design the final album cover piece.
