"The Sentence"
"The Sentence" is a masking tape/mixed media art installation that was part of a larger conceptual environment that I created on the top floor of Building A, at the Old Jerome High School. I titled the show "So Close...So Far", and it was comprised of several installations which came together to signify a symbolic dialogue pf imagery relating to life, death, and rebirth. The Sentence presents itself as an intuitive thought process which explores the internalization and processing, both conciously and subconciously, of grief, loss, and recovery.
According to Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, there are 5 Stages of Grief that a person must cycle (and often recycle) thru in order to regain clarity and hope after loss. These stages include: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance (not always experienced in that sequence). The original portrait cartoons for the piece were penned, in smaller scale, with a cartographer's nib and India ink. They were then enlarged as photo copy derivatives for presentation in this conceptual "sketchbook" format which was displayed in the vast corridor of the Jerome Art Center from 2011-2012.
Materials used in this artwork included: masking tape, paper, vellum, ink, wire, fishing line, s-hooks and binder clips. The installation was interactive and kinetic - allowing for the vellum cover sheets to be moved and changed around in order to high light the portraits which most accurately corresponded to the current stage of grief experienced.
