WORKSHOP COMPLEX IN ALSANCAK

City, plays the most important role in our lives. We born in it, live in it and die in it but through this life time, how much attention do we pay to understand it? Do we realize the dynamics that shape our environment now and before?

I based my proposal on these kind of questions and try to identify the qualities that city combined in itself. Project takes places in İzmir / Alsancak as the competitive heart of the city center. I explored the project area in terms of accessibility and adaptability to the young professionals.

First, I specified some product types representing and influencing different senses to make easier to reach people from different regions of the city.
Second, I defined to corresponding professions of these products and production methods. They are Musician, Writer and Documentary Producer. They are all interested in understanding, explaining, representing and raising awareness about the city.
Musician examines the different parts of the city in terms of musical characteristics, produces songs by inspiring from each particular location, blends the genres, city sound and musicians and plays, records and publishes his works.

Documentary producer documents the existing urban environment retrospectively, incorporate the people to the documentation with interviews, creates visual materials to raise awareness and organizes visual representations in the building.

Writer redacts the historical background of the city, publishes his works to newspapers and journals, creates source for other professions and collects his works in a public library.
The horizontally aligned pieces becomes space defining elements, functional units and activity objects in the proposal. Space, shape its own characteristics by the pieces and it represents with the help of verticality, voids and even on the ceilings.

Living, working and other units align around a curved stair and differentiated voids in the circulation keeps the continuity of spatial experience between different floors, lets users to observe other users and feel the up and down perception in a different way.
Facade also expresses the conceptual focus of the project. Non-overlapness and overlapness, solid and void, irregularity and togetherness notions meets their functional counterparts such as lightness and spaciousness in both interior and exterior spaces.
