Project Joo Chiat

Project Brief

Caramel Road located two streets away from the famous Joo Chiat Road. Known as the little Saigon, Joo Chiat is notorious for its night activities. On conducting my site research, I noticed there is a disrupted flow of shophouses in terms of styles. some are hugely influence by Peranakan style while others consist of simpler elements that embrace the modern style. The experience of rising a shophouse that feel so different lies in the  corridor path known as the five foot way. It is describe as a common ground between the interior and the exterior.
Key Concept

Infuse the experience of a five foot way and hints of Peranakan Style
As the user walk through the platform, the space transit to a modern layout defined by minimal shapes and furnitures.   The modern style goes in contrast with the Peranakan thus still retaining some features for user to feel at home
The kitchen spaces is hugely influenced by the Peranakan style. The Peranakan style design create relevancy with the site context.
The Master bedroom can be related closely to the backyard of the shophouse. The windows allow morning sunlight to penetrate into the concrete flooring. The raw materiality is further highlighted by the nature theme fabrics
The overall design embrace an open layout. The shopfront allow passerby to have direct view of dining and living spaces, thus the idea of an AirBNB in this area is not secluded from the public
