Bring Many Names
Symbolism
Bring Many Names illustrates the dynamic of religion and community by building religious symbols – chalices, in this case – out of the names of the religious. The chalices are folded from QR codes of the names of North Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s leadership representing the congregation, printed on transparencies, and lit from within. This serves as a visual metaphor for how faith illuminates the community and how the church community, in turn, holds up faith. Here, the congregation is represented by the QR code origami, while the light stands in for faith.
Inspiration & Background
The work was designed for and exhibited in the North Unitarian Universalist Congregation - NUUC for short - a liberally religious and queer-friendly church in Lewis Center, Ohio.  The Unitarian Universalist faith takes the flaming chalice as their symbol, which directly influenced the form that Bring Many Names took.  The title of the installation, Bring Many Names, is taken from a Unitarian Universalist hymn about the multifaceted and inclusive nature of the divine.
