Spring Blossom
(batik, silk 100%, hot wax, 86х65 cm,  2018)

Work in progress step by step
I apply the first layer of wax on details that need to remain white. After that I add the dye. Although more traditional batik should be placed in a dye bath, I use paint brushes to place color in a specific and detailed way. Painting with dye is similar to the watercolor painting. After the dye is dry I apply the second layer of wax, then once more, there can be a lot of these layers.
The work is painted from light to dark, the tone should be gained constantly.
Finally, I cover the whole painting with wax. This layer creates a seal over the entire piece, which will be cracked and broken to allow a crackle effect in selected areas. For more detalisation I use brush to paint or dab the dark dye over the cracks. This takes longer but allows a greater measure of control over the amount and placement of the dark dye and the crackle effect.
Removing the wax is simple, but time-consuming. You need to iron, iron, iron…and then iron some more. I place the batik in between layers of newspaper, then iron over the piece, allowing the newspaper to absorb the liquid wax as it heats up. Once the newspaper is completely saturated, switch it out for fresh newspaper. It will take numerous repeats to remove all of the wax from the fabric.
Then the silk must be steam-set in order for the dye to bond permanently to the fabric. The next step is to roll up your completed silk painting in  paper and old sheets. Use 2 - 3 sheets to layer your painting with. Projects with a lot of concentrated dye will need more layers of sheets to absorb excesses.
Roll your package up carefully so it doesn't wrinkle. Any wrinkles will be steam set and hard to remove later. Secure with masking tape so it doesn't come undone.
Place the roll in the galvanized hand made stove pipe.  Make sure the sides of the roll do not touch the sides of the pipe. Condensation in the pipe will cause water damage if it comes in contact with the roll
Then place the pipe on the big pot with water, which is standing on the hot plate. Steam for 3 hours or for however long your dyes require. Steam setting is definitely the best way to get the brightest and longest lasting color on silk.
