Experimental Film Studies

These are my term two university Experimental Practices outcomes. They were a collection of experimental short films based on different topics with different goals. Each film was given a set of limitations, be it time, location or length of clips.
To start the project we got to experiment with physical film and understand how it works, How to manipulate it and then go on to develop some short experiments of our own.
This was the first film. For this I intended to represent Greenwich Stockwell street during an hour of midday. All the footage was from that single day and was intended to represent the entire area during the hour in under 2 mins. I did this by trying to limit how much could be seen and read at any one time to create a sense of place.
his is the second film for my Experimental Film Studies course. It is a remake of the film Cubism by Laurie Calvert (https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/w...) .

For this I intended to capture the playfulness of cubism as well as keep to the sense of an item which it timeless such as a pack of cards. I limited myself to just a pack of cards for the entire film. I created a musical backing track and tied it in with the visuals of the cards to make it exciting and energetic. Whilst I drifted away from the silence and cubism meaning of the film I tried to incorporate some of the stop motion and chaos that was in the original.

As well as the limit of just a pack of cards I was limited to only still images and a 1min timeframe, However ultimately I believe this helped my film and its style.
This is the third film for my Experimental Film Studies course. It is my take on a modern representation of the sirens from the Odyssey.

To do this I chose mobile phones to take the place of the sirens as they tend to draw you in similar to the way that sirens are portrayed in the Odyssey. The way I showed this was by having scenes which could be considered beautiful with human interaction, showing through a rose tinted filter paired with calming music. This contrasted with the harsh sounds of the phone notification and the scenes of the phone which is pointed down away from the beauty that surrounds it. To further prove this point, as the film goes on I started to phase out the rose tinted filters on the phone to show that it is drawing you away from this dream like state.

Unlike my previous films I tried to show this compelling urge to use the phone through pacing; such as how it starts slow and makes use of cross dissolves to start it off peaceful and calm before increasing in the amount of phone notifications towards the mid point of the film. It then cuts to the phone being locked away to represent how Odysseus tied himself to the mast to avoid the siren song. However like in the Odyssey there are constant flashes of the phone making use of psychedelic music and strong blend layers to show the inner struggle not to reach for the phone representing how he tried to resist the urge to listen to the sirens song.
