DASHBOARD FOR AGRICULTURAL WEEDING: A UX/UI PROJECT

PROJECT SUMMARY
A large, well-known tractor company came to the design team with a request to update their proprietary software interface used inside a tractor to set parameters for weeding and spraying crops. The operators had trouble navigating the interface and reading the interface amongst the varying environmental lighting.

MY ROLE
I was employed at a UX Consulting firm and worked as the UI and UX designer on this project. The research and hand-drawn wireframe sketches were provided by the client. I refined the wireframes with the client and then created a prototype. The tractor company tested the designs and delivered feedback. I refined the wireframes and created the UI.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Tractor operators struggled with locating tasks on the dashboard, performing tasks, and readability on the current interface.

GOALS
Create an interface that is legible in varying environmental light with simplified navigation and inputs to increase operator efficiency in setting up and conducting weeding and crop spraying.

CONSIDERATIONS
The client noted that tractor operators wear gloves when using the interface, as well as the tractor vibrating during operation. I needed to create large enough buttons to be tappable while wearing gloves and to enable accurate selections while the tractor is vibrating.

The client requested that both navigation menus be in view and accessible at all times.

The interface also needed to be legible in various types of outdoor environmental lighting.

SOLUTION
An easy to use interface featuring user-friendly navigation surfacing top tasks, large buttons suitable for gloves and a moving screen that is legible in varying environmental lighting, enabling tractor operators to be more efficient. The client reported an increase in employee efficiency and satisfaction.
