for the çanakkale martyrs’ memorial, a contest was run by the ministry of national defense in 1944 and a project was selected. however, due to financial impossibilites, the project could not be started. in 1952, a charity committee formed from voluntary participants began collecting support from the people for building the monument. the idea of building a monument was so accepted by the community that the campaign launched by the milliyet newspaper and the committee reached support from many sectors of society. by emphasizing a few of these support stories, we tell how çanakkale martyrs’ abide was built together.
