Map for 'Into The Raging Sea' by Rachel Slade

I was commissioned by HarperCollins USA to draw a map for the book by the writer Rachel Slade, 'Into The Raging Sea' (published in May 2018 by their imprint Ecco Books).

The book deals with the tragedy of the container ship El Faro, which in October 2015 sank with all hands during Hurricane Joaquin, having received conflicting information about the storm's track from various weather forecasters. Featured as the book's endpapers, the map visualises this final voyage, displaying the course it took in September-October 2015 on its journey from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico and the location of its sinking near the Bahamas; also displayed within the inset box are the diverging forecasted tracks provided to the ship's crew by the forecasting agencies, and the actual track of the hurricane, which proved to be one of the most unpredictable in recent history.

The map's design and colour scheme were inspired by nautical charts, and was drawn entirely using Adobe Illustrator.
