Otium lounge chair explores the idea of mobility in furniture design. With the intention for a worldwide distribution and frequently moving user, Otium chair is designed for a compact shipping and straightforward self-assembly.
Chair construction is made in a simple efficient manner so the user can assemble it easily and without any tools: the frame parts are fixed with bolts and wing nuts, which are tightened by hand, and fabric seating is fixed to a frame simply with zippers.
Slim and light black powder-coated tubular steel frame resembles minimalist and clean aesthetics of Bauhaus school. The seating crafted from heavy-duty polypropylene straps and faux leather, which are widely used for industrial applications, gives the chair minimal yet playful appearance.
Manufacturing:
Experimenting with tubular metal bending, I learned about technical subtleties of the process, being able to measure a neutral axis and a springback to develop accurate manufacturing drawings. A metal frame of the chair is made of four parts that are easily assembled together with screws and joining details. All metal parts are powder coated that gives a great quality and durable finish. Fabric seating made of heavy-duty industrial straps sewn together so it can be easily fixed on a frame with zippers on the bottom of the chair.
