An ongoing investigation of the concept of "self" intended to provoke thought about how we express ourselves, how others see us, and how our self identity shifts over the course of our lives. Each person I draw is represented by 3 symbolic items that are carefully chosen based on how well they capture the person's "character". The head is a plant or item from nature that represents some dominant aspects of their personality. The body is made of their "signature" article of clothing -- their favorite shirt, for example, or the clothing they are most often found wearing. Their feet are represented by either the shoes they usually wear or by shoes that symbolize the sort of person they believe (or wish) themselves to be.
Eventually I may use the portraits I make to create a book that explores Identity and character. In the meantime, I am taking commissions for custom portraits with clients who want to participate in this project and who are willing to share what their 3 symbolic items are.
All work is done with watercolor and india ink.
