Shelf Life (No. 2, Seoul)

Please note that no copyright infringement is intended. This work remains part of my education at University of Reading, Department of Typography and Graphic Communication – it is not actually published. I have credited original authors, artists and photographers as far as possible throughout my magazine.
As part of a student brief, I was asked to come up with a proposition and design an independent magazine. My finished work is a publication called Shelf Life – a magazine that focuses on independent bookstores and publishing around the world, one city at a time. This is the second issue, which is about Seoul  – the first issue on Singapore can be found here.
The structure of the magazine is indicated by the coloured tab on the right hand page, visible from the outside of the magazine.
I also illustrated several spreads.
Typographic detailing – each article ends with a Wingdings glyph. This piece is on the graphic novel 'Uncomfortably Happily' by Hong Yeon Sik. All work remains the property of the artist.
An article on Lee Ji-myung, a North Korean defector who now writes from Seoul. Image is taken from VG. All work remains the property of the original creators.
Like the first issue, the second issue uses a variety of stocks including a glossy stock for featured artist Lee Kyutae. All artwork remains the property of the artist.
Typographic detail.
A new colour scheme is used for the second issue of the magazine. A deep blue and purple are used in combination in the furniture of the magazine – this changes each issue, but remains a recognisable part of the magazine brand.
The book review illustration is updated each issue to include the books reviewed in that particular issue.
The magazine was handcrafted by me. It is perfect bound and printed on a variety of stocks – mainly 120gsm recycled, uncoated paper (occasionally 90gsm) as well as 150gsm glossy paper for photo essays.
