Systems Engineering Processes and Practice

ISO/IEC 15288 “Systems and software engineering — System life-cycle processes” identifies four process groups to support systems engineering (see Figure 2-1): technical processes, project processes, organization project-enabling processes, and agreement processes.

The Technical processes cover the design, development and implementation phase of a system life-cycle.  They are used to define the requirements for a system, to transform the requirements into an effective product, to permit consistent reproduction of the product where necessary, to use the product to provide the required services, to sustain the provision of those services and to dispose of the product when it is retired from service.  Table 2-1 shows the technical processes used in this guide and a comparison with ISO 15288-2008.

This book describes the processes commonly employed for systems engineering and systems engineering management. Chapters 1 through 3 provide an overview of the Systems Engineering Processes, including the Technical processes, Project processes, Organizational (Enterprise) processes and Agreement processes. Chapter 4 describes generic Life-cycle stages including functions, integration and characteristics. Chapters 5 through 7 presents the details of the Technical, Project, and Enterprise or Organization processes of systems engineering. Chapter 8 through 10 describes the Enabling Systems Engineering Processes, Systems Engineering Support Activities, and Specialty Engineering Activities Systems Engineering Process. Chapter 11 presents an overview of Tailoring the SE processes. Chapter 12 describes Systems Engineering Processes and Practice including Standard SE processes . Chapter 13 presents a detailed view of the Stakeholder Requirements Definition Process. Chapter 14 describes in more detail the Requirements Definition Process. Chapter 15 describes the Logical Decomposition Process and Functional Analysis and Allocation Chapter 16
describes Systems Architecture Synthesis and the Design Solution. Chapter 17 presents the Trade Study process for analyzing alternatives for architectures and design solutions (also called Analysis of Alternatives). Chapter...
