In early April, FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb stated that Internet service providers and other companies who provide online services have a responsibility to help police the sale of illicit opioid products, many of which are obtained through illegal online listings. In addition to more commonly prescribed opioids, a recent congressional report has uncovered the fact that fentanyl, a powerful opioid drug typically only used in hospital and emergency settings, is alarmingly easy to obtain online and shipped via the U.S. post office.

Gottlieb says it is time for online companies such as PayPal, who often processes payments for these goods, and others to begin taking a more proactive role in helping to prevent these transactions so that these drugs don’t end up in the hands of those who would abuse them.
