'CATNAMI' Cult Movie Poster Design
This solution was my response to the task of creating a ‘cult’ movie poster. We were challenged to create an original movie concept and then create a poster to go with it. Being the ‘cult’ movie genre, the possibilities were endless, plus it gave the freedom to come up with something unusual. I decided to go for a farcical movie plot about a Tsunami full of cats that washes over Tokyo. A classified animal-testing ship containing hundreds of cats ranging from tigers to docile house cats gets overturned by a large Tsunami and sends the wave full of drugged up felines hurtling towards Tokyo. I wanted the poster to have a somewhat cartoonish quality due to the nonsensical concept. I noticed through research that the shape created by a large wave that is beginning to barrel forms a similar shape to a cats eye. This forms the main element of the poster. A cats eye is formed in the wave and the distant skyline of Tokyo and Mount Fuji form its Iris. I created numerous alternative posters for the concept, two of which I have included here. One of the alternatives pays homage to one of my favourite paintings, “The Great Wave Of Kanagawa” by Hokusai.
