OVERVIEW
THE CHALLENGE
FIRST Robotics is a not-for-profit public charity designed to inspire youths interest and participation in science and tech; they hold robotics competitions for ages 4-18 worldwide. There are four different programs for kids depending on age and intent and there are multiple different roles for adults including coaches, event volunteers, and team mentors. We were tasked with redoing FIRST's registration and team creation process. Previously users had to sign into multiple different portals to depending on their program and/or role type.
MY ROLE
UX Lead: Running workshops, client interviews, wireframes, assisting in visual design & development.
THE SOLUTION
Single-sign-on process for users, collecting minimal information upfront and then more as needed based on the user's goals.
Modular as to accommodate for business rules, so that functionality could be plugged in or taken out depending on program or role type; this was to make moving from one program to the next, or one role to a different one, much easier for users.
More consistent processes across programs and consistent data collection across roles.
Simplified content of forms, utilizing tooltips and other forms of helper text to pull excessive copy out of the users' way.
Responsive site using bootstrap.
Flexible and scalable to allow for new role types or programs.
PROCESS
Why are we here?
Below are the forms that we started with.

STAKEHOLDER INTERVIEWS
(What we heard)
Although the overall competition experience is great, the current digital experience is unsatisfactory.
Users give up on participating because of the current form… it’s frustrating, and time consuming.
There are different flows for every program which have been developed at different times and with different requirements.
EDUCATION & CHANGE MANGEMENT
Part of our process was to help educate the client on the latest form designs. This helped with change management and socializing these changes across the organization to create buy in for those outside of the project.
