My personal project intend to investigate our state as Africans through documenting funerals in communities that still have reverence for the passing of a fellow human being. How it was traditional, before we became a nation of consumers. As much as this project is a about my concerns for our nation, it’s also created to invite the viewer to question themselves if we are heading the right direction as a society.

Documenting funerals is basically a social commentary about where we are as nation. Materialism and conspicuous consumption is in every sector of our country. The average young black person is living way over his or her means. The reason I chose to communicate my concerns through funeral, is due to my fascination of how communal African funerals have always been. Documenting, understanding and questioning this shift, is the quest of this project.

This body of work is highly routed in dualities and different contrast. The contrast between capitalism and materialism verses socialism. The duality that exist in life and death. Joy within sadness. This is all in a setting of African funerals. As funerals are hardly subjects of documentation. The images are searching, questioning, learning, understanding and witnessing.
